Yoga Therapy Diploma

taught by Various teachersLondon

Between 2007 and 2010 Yogacampus trained over 30 yoga therapists through its Yoga Therapy Diploma Course which was provided jointly with the Yoga Biomedical Trust (YBT). In 2009 the YBT decided to concentrate its activities on research and move away from training yoga therapists. At around the same time the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) register was launched and a core curriculum established that met the National Occupational Standards for Yoga Therapy. All this change was an ideal opportunity to reflect on the knowledge and tuition that a yoga therapist needs in the 21st century and so in 2011 we launched an updated yoga therapy diploma following many months of input from some of the most highly respected yoga therapists in the UK. We hope that we have kept all that was really good about the earlier course but also included new ideas to reflect on the current vision of the role of a yoga therapist within the natural health care community.

Like our highly acclaimed Teacher Training Diploma we have a core faculty of widely acclaimed teachers and yoga therapists, supplemented by experts in relevant fields to bring their differing perspectives to the course. This is one of very few UK training courses in the growing area of yoga therapy and will provide a practical grounding in the key skills of yoga therapy, as well as a synthesis of yoga therapy approaches from different yoga traditions. The training provides a balanced mix of theory and practical work, with an emphasis on viewing a person as an holistic whole so that students gain an understanding of how to tailor a practice to an individual rather than relying on prescriptive practices for particular conditions. The development of practical skills is based on the student’s own explorations and experience of working with clients with medical conditions, supported by supervision from tutors and mentors.

This 18 month part time training consists of 26 days of mandatory classroom attendance (typically 3 day weekends of Friday to Sunday roughly once every 2 months), 60 hours of elective tuition, and significant practical work in small group and mentored situations. We will be setting up a yoga therapy student clinic at the Yogacampus Training Centre to help you obtain the necessary hands-on experience. You will also be required to have at least 3 sessions of yoga therapy yourself during the course in order to experience yoga therapy for yourself. The course offers a comprehensive and in-depth perspective of yoga therapy with a flexible approach that gives support for individual learning styles.

The core tuition of 26 days will include tuition on:

• what yoga philosophy can tell us about health, healing and the relief of suffering
• less widely known practices particularly suitable for use in yoga therapy, including yoga nidra, restorative yoga, pawanmuktasana
• how to use asana, pranayama and meditation practices in yoga therapy
• building the therapeutic relationship: communication and listening skills
• case history taking and interpreting
• the body as an energetic system and its impact on internal disorders
• common medical conditions
• pain and its management, psychological issues around pain, and dealing with grief and trauma
• yoga approaches to structural therapy
• practical training in working with clients.

In addition you will be required to take 60 hours of tuition from elective modules that will include yoga therapy for specific conditions (like cancer, ME and chronic fatigue, women’s conditions) and opportunities to study aspects of yoga therapy in more depth. You will also be required to spend at least 10 half days in our Yoga Therapy Student Clinic both treating clients in a supervised situation and also observing yoga therapy being given The course will also include assessed written work (including case studies), practical sessions and assessments. Please also note that you must be computer-literate and have daily access to the internet for electronic submission of written work and assessments.
