Richard Freeman Portrait

Friday 15 October – 6.30 to 9.00 pm
Astanga Vinyasa Practice as a Meditative Flow
When the breathing, bandhas, mudra and dristi are joined together with a consistent flow within the postures, meditation spontaneously arises. Through standing, seated and finishing postures of Ashtanga Yoga’s Primary Series, you will be guided deeply into these core patterns with a continuous joining and separating of masculine and feminine movements as a means of discovering strength, flexibility and clear focus of mind. For all levels of student other than complete beginners. Some experience of Astanga Vinyasa yoga will be helpful, but not essential.

Saturday 16 October – 10.00 am to 1.00 pm
Back Bending on the Current of Breath
This workshop will be an energetic exploration of integrated whole body patterns found in back bending. We will work with the internal alignment mirrored in the pelvic floor as it moves around the central axis of the body. Using these patterns combined with integrated muscular patterns within the hamstrings, spine, shoulders and arms, we will construct a series of deep backbends which are encouraged to blossom easily on the current of the breath. For students with at least one year regular yoga practice and some experience of the Astanga Vinyasa system.

Saturday 16 October – 2.15 to 5.15 pm
Integrated Core Alignment of Balancing
Whether in a headstand, an advanced arm balance or even when simply standing in samasthitih, the principles are the same: finding core strength and integrating internal alignment with external forms, to allow the natural intelligence to rest easily along the central axis of the body. In this workshop we will learn a gradual and intelligent method of developing the core strength needed for arm balances, working with the rhythm of the breath to cultivate complementary internal and external movements which will help make arm balancing and head standing a healing part of your practice. For students with at least one year regular yoga practice and some experience of the Astanga Vinyasa system.

astanga yoga

Richard Freeman is one of the world’s leading teachers of Astanga Vinyasa yoga. He began the practice of yoga asana and meditation in 1968 and subsequently found an integrative vision in the teachings of the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Richard’s teaching style is unique in that it continuously restructures and reframes the biomechanical and perceptual forms of the asanas and movements in the context of a profound understanding of yoga philosophy, all laden with humour and compassion. Richard spent nearly nine years in Asia studying various traditions which he incorporates into the Astanga yoga practice. Read Richard Freeman's full biography.

What our students say

I liked everything about Richard Freeman's intensive. The practical classes were filled with clear instruction, humour, fun and were very aware from a safety point of view. I learned so much which can be integrated into everyday life.
