Inclusivity includes everyone. It is through this principle that Yoga for Adults with Special Needs was developed. We are a part of an ageing population suffering from a shortage of quality health and fitness services, and this course is dedicated to addressing the situation.

The robust three-day course explores the tools you can use to support adults with a variety of different abilities in discovering their potential through the therapeutic benefits of Special Yoga.

How this Course Benefits You

  1. You will develop the knowledge to guide differently abled individuals in a yoga session.
  2. Your confidence to integrate training into a group and individual session will increase.
  3. You will strengthen your understanding of how the yoga practice can influence functions of the body from a physiological, physical and emotional perspective.
  4. Your skills will be refined through the use of props during the practice.

Topics Covered
Please note the course outline is provided as a guide on what to expect throughout the experience.

Topic 1 – Introducing the Special Yoga Practice
You will be provided with a background to the evolution of the practice and the possibilities of Special Yoga. Whether you are a parent, teacher or therapist, we will provide you with the personal and practical knowledge to enter various situations with confidence to nourish their fullest potential.

Topic 2 – Sound and Breathing Techniques
Music and the voice can be powerful tools in installing, rhythm, flow and a compelling ambience into your sessions, especially when combined with mudras, a hand movement that will direct the flow of energy through your body. The various ways to incorporate music and mudras into your practice will be introduced.

Topic 3 – Working with Groups
Different strategies will be demonstrated throughout to support you in understanding the importance of keeping an open mind and having a dynamic approach. The module will also consider various group sizes and environments.

Topic 4 – Chair Yoga
As a leader in the practice of Chair yoga, Richard Kravetz will help you advance your skills by teaching a range of yoga poses adapted for people who are less mobile. Chair yoga has proved to be invaluable for the members of our community and will give you the capacity to ensure no one will feel excluded from the sessions your offer.

Topic 5 – Meditation Techniques
Special Yoga methodology encourages a mindful practice in all aspects, inviting a deeper physical and emotional awareness of the body for both yourself and the person you support.

Topic 6 – Asanas
Asanas are the yoga poses. They help to realign, balance and strengthen the body. The course leaders will guide you through how to adapt poses for the different ages, to build sequences and to nurture the potential within.

Topic 7 – Yoga Nidra
You will be directing movements in a sequence that will encourage the body to relax. This will be adopted by reading a range of books, studying research and undergoing specialist training.

Topic 8 – Applying Special Yoga
A series of case studies and live demonstrations will provide you with a deeper insight into how core principles can be practically applied.

Topic 9 – Creating a Class
You will learn how to pose questions, challenge behaviours and become aware of a person’s range of abilities to help tailor your practice accordingly in both a one-to-one sessions and group settings.

Teaching Style
You will be guided through highly effective and accessible strategies for integrating the remedial advantages of Special Yoga methodology into the lives of adults with special needs.
