tias little: yoga from the ground up

Tias Little

This intensive explores the foundational teachings of the yoga practice through asana, living anatomy and wisdom. In the body, we use both "mobilisation" techniques and "stabilisation" techniques to open the body. We review the key anatomical structures that relate to the arches of the feet and detail how the feet are "the foundation to the temple of the body". We study the inner, outer and core myo-fascial meridians in the legs. We study the importance of aligning the knees and femurs in order to achieve optimum balance in the pelvis. To this end, we study the musculature of the leg and the primary arteries and nerve channels that flow into the legs through the pelvis.  We emphasise the importance of the sacrum relative to the lower two chakras, muladhara and svadhisthana. We study mula and uddiyana bandha while undertaking an in-depth study of the ilio-psoas and its pre-eminent position in the body.

This intensive also introduces the poetic power of the Rg Veda and the foundational teachings on Death and Impermanence. We read the Katha Upanishad and explore the Buddha's teachings on impermanence, conditionality and no-self. We study some of the foundational sutras from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and review the Ashtanga Yoga system. For the meditation study, we implement the Four Foundations of Mindfulness as taught by the Buddha. We also introduce the power of chanting and discuss the ways that chanting may accompany the practice.

Tias Little's background is steeped in both academic study and physical discipline. He began his yoga training in 1984 in the Iyengar system under the guidance of his mother, and made his first trip to India in 1989, when he lived in Mysore for 6 months, learning the first two series of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga with K. Pattabhi Jois. After practising Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga for 10 years, Tias immersed himself in the study of the healing arts, including massage, cranial-sacral therapy and bodywork. He teaches yoga with a sensitivity and subtlety informed by his anatomical knowledge and keen sense of touch. His teaching is grounded in the structure and precision of alignment from the Iyengar system, while sharing the spaciousness and compassionate wisdom that stems from the Buddhist tradition. Tias has an MA in Eastern Philosophy from St. John's College, and is currently a student of Tsoknyi Rinpoche in the Dzogchen tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. www.prajnayoga.net
