The training intensive will integrate practical application of yoga philosophy and practice. We will review the models of the kosha-s, guna-s, dosha-s and vital essences to explore how they help us understand our selves and others, and the suggestions they offer for modifications to practice. We experience the effects of sequencing movement coordinated with breath, breathing practices, and meditation foci that have the intention of physically, physiologically, and mentally/emotionally shifting us into a more sattvic/balanced state of mindful attention. We will spend time in lecture and discussion understanding the logic behind selecting practice elements and sequencing in this manner so that you can reproduce the effects in your own practice and classes.

Topics will be covered over the course of 5 days:

•Conceptual models to understand how the mind and body interact and influence each other to give rise to the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and how yoga practice facilitates mental health.

•The vital role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in how we react, respond, and cope with internal and external stressors.

•Guidance to select and sequence yoga practices to positively influence the direction of change in the body-mind for self-practice and teaching.

•Key principles for teaching students experiencing anxiety and depression, and best practices to create a safe space in general yoga classes.

By attending this training, you can expect to gain:

•Personal experience of integrated yoga practices designed to create greater clarity, peace, and capacity in every part of yourself

•In pairs experience teaching a sattva enhancing approach to yoga practice

•Increased understanding of anxiety and depression as aspects of the human condition, and expanded confidence to use yoga practice and philosophy to relieve symptoms of these conditions

•Enhanced self-awareness and self-compassion

•An opportunity to ask questions relevant to adapting yoga practices to improve mental health

What our students say

I have really enjoyed the course, mostly the physical practices and integrating asana and pranayama (with retentions) together. Something I’ll practice myself and likely introduce into my teaching. It has re-inspired my interest in this type of yoga Jane Robertson on Mental Health Basics, August 2015
