Yoga as Therapy for Back Problems

Each year an estimated 40% of the population is afflicted with back problems and along with the pain, distress and loss of the individual’s ability to function normally, it costs around £5 billion in lost working days. It is quite common for people with back pain to be recommended yoga as a form of rehabilitation exercise. Thus it is extremely important for yoga teachers and yoga therapists, to know and understand enough about back problems to have the confidence to be able to help such people and better empower them to help themselves.

Course Overview

This is a series of 2 weekends, each of which can be done as a stand-alone workshop or you can do both as a specialist training, with some course work, in order to obtain a certificate.

You will learn about the most common conditions affecting the back, how to determine which yoga postures might be helpful and which to avoid. The aims are to be able to safely mobilise and strengthen the back, both for rehabilitation and for maintaining a healthy, resilient spine.

We will include the role of the mind and techniques to balance the energy body (koshas – levels of being) for pain control, self-understanding and to promote healing.

Both weekends will contain some theory, as well as practical work, and are aimed at yoga teachers, trainee teachers and yoga therapists.

Course Contents

The first workshop is aimed mainly at integrating people with back problems into classes and will cover:

• Anatomy and pathology of common conditions such as; herniated disc, facet joint sprain, sciatica, arthritis, common postural imbalances
• Red flag symptoms and contraindications
• The koshas – the levels of being
• Posture and the physical and psychological aspects of common postural imbalances
• Corrective sequences for common postural imbalances
• How to maintain the integrity of the spine in sitting
• Pain relief
• Relaxation positions and techniques
• Movements and poses for different types of problem
• Breath work for healing and stress relief

The second weekend is geared more towards working therapeutically on a one to one basis and will cover:

• Further conditions including sacroiliac joint dysfunction, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, osteoporosis
• Detailed postural and movement assessment and recording

What our students say

Anna is a treasure of a teacher - her knowledge is deep, she conveys it well and lightly, has a sense of humour but takes her responsibility to teach so that understanding is felt in the body. Colleen Nicholas on Yoga as Therapy for Back Problems, January 2016
