Dr Kumar brings a unique synergistic approach to yoga, which has evolved from a lifelong immersion in the various traditions of both north and south India. This includes the branch of Ayurvedic medicine called Kaya Chikitsa, an internal self-healing system which is virtually unknown in the West. Dr. Kumar draws on his experience of studying and practising within eighty six traditions of yoga, approaching it as an applied science of mind and body.

His mastery as a meditation teacher, honouring the lineage of Patanjali and Buddha, provides an effective and dynamic methodology in harnessing the power of the mind to connect with our human physiology on a sub-atomic level.

His knowledge derives not only from his scientific background, but also from his personal experience of repairing and rehabilitating his own body through yoga, following a serious accident.

The objective of the course will be to explore the purpose and practice of postures on a biochemical and cellular level. This will be invaluable to practitioners of every level, especially those in somatic-based professions such as physiotherapy, osteopathy, and massage/bodywork, which emphasise internal perception and experience.

Dr. Kumar will highlight the holistic teachings of the great Krishnamacharya, with a focus on the therapeutic and metabolic effects of asana.

Participants will develop an understanding of the evolution of modern styles of Asana purpose and practice such as Ashtanaga Vinyasa, Iyengar, Viniyoga and Power Yoga, the genesis of which is his legacy. Krishnamacharya’s yoga is considered to be complete, based on the systems outlined in traditional texts such as, Yoga Rahasya, Sri Tattwanidhi and Kapala Kurantaka.

The course will include exploration of the applied Yoga physiology of the asana practice of the following five systems:

  • Srishti Krama, practice for endurance
  • Rakshna Krama, practice for strength
  • Shikshana Krama, practice for alignment and balance
  • Adhyatmika Krama, practice for zero resistance
  • Chikitsa Krama, practice for therapy

The same underlying scientific principles of physiology are applied in YogaKaya Chikitsa, the tradition of masso therapy using techniques involving physical manipulation for intensive and immediate recovery. The aim is to revive this ancient technique that is in danger of dying out in India. Yoga Kaya Chikitsa, throws new light on widely-practiced body therapies such as massage and osteopathy by applying subtler psychological and physiological dimensions.

Dr. Kumar is internationally recognized as an inspirational yoga and meditation teacher as well as an award-winning scientist.
