Celebrating 15 years of the Yogacampus Teacher Training with Board member Graham Burns

Can you believe that this year marks 15 years of the Yogacampus Teacher Training Diploma? Wow! We’ve just started with our 30th intake in London and our reputation has ensured our programme can thrive in York and Manchester too. To celebrate this landmark, we talk to Board member Graham Burns.

What do you love the most about passing your yoga knowledge on to students?

Meeting such a fabulous range of people from all sorts of different backgrounds, many of whom have gone on to be personal friends. Also, the fact that it keeps me learning! First, I need to make sure that I stay on top of the latest research, but also the discussions which we have during modules never fail to make me question something I have said.

Your fondest moment on the Yogacampus teacher training diploma?

Although I wasn’t teaching on the course at the outset, I was involved in some of the background work setting the course up, and my fondest moment was probably the final weekend of the first ever intake all those years ago. I was almost in tears at the realisation that we had succeeded in training such a fabulous group of teachers – some of whom have since gone on to become leading yoga teachers in their own right.

What advice would you give to someone planning to embark on their teacher training journey?

Try to be as open-minded as you can. Be willing to explore new ways of doing things and to ‘unlearn’ some of the things you think you know – that doesn’t mean that they are wrong, but be ready to question them. And, however experienced you are as a practitioner, try to remember what it was like in your first yoga classes and be prepared to meet your students there.
