Yoga for Digestive Health - Manchester

To coincide with the release of her new book Yoga Therapy for Digestive Health (Singing Dragon), Charlotte Watts leads this day to explore the theory and practice for yoga teachers, yoga therapists, experienced practitioners and other body and movement workers. The day will cover the fascial, stress, trauma and sensory connections with digestive issues that are so relevant within yoga philosophy and practice.

Course Information

This training will explore how yoga – with its focus on stilling the mind – can have profound effects through the gut-brain axis on conditions such as IBS, IBD, acid reflux, colitis, diverticulitis and more. Charlotte will shed light on these continual communications between the gut and the brain and the relevance of the fascia, vagus nerve, interoception and proprioception in digestive health. Also how yoga philosophy focuses on accessing this central axis and recognising our need to listen to our visceral states. This will be practically applied for students’ practice and teaching approach.

Topics that will be covered:

•Journey around the digestive system

•Philosophy for the modern gut

•Visceral subtle and physical anatomy

•Body psychotherapy and the chakras

•Practices that particularly support gut-brain axis communication, digestive soothing, visceral ‘slide-and-glide’, grounding for lower chakra connection and intelligent bandha utilisation to reduce, rather than increase tension through the gut

•Specific conditions

What you can expect to gain from the training:

•Gaining understanding of digestive system health as the heart of our whole being, relating and health through all other body systems.

•Understanding how exploring digestive aspects in relation to breath, mindfulness, posture, anatomy, movement, stress and trauma can help us unravel the root causes of unrest in the lower chakras.

•A focus on breath awareness allows the breath to drop into the belly and diaphragm, essential for good digestive function and understanding the fascial connections within the viscera help shape movement that enables optimal function.

•How coming back to a mindful asana practice with guidance from gut feelings can feed into an intelligent practice guided by the yamas and gunas.

Suggested outline for the day

9.30am – 11am – Introduction to the Digestive System from anatomy, fascia and Ayurvedic perspectives

11am – 11.30am – Grounding and somatic practices to drop into the belly

11.30am to 12.30pm – Stress, trauma and modern chakra theory in relation to digestive health

12.30pm – 1pm– Practice to move from the belly and feet

1pm – 2pm LUNCH

2pm – 2.30pm – overview of specific conditions from medical and Ayurvedic perspectives

2.30pm – 3.30pm – Restorative and supported inversion practice

3.30pm – 4.30pm – Sounding, nyasa and meditation

4.30pm – 5pm – Q&A
