Being Yoga: Through Movement and the Body
This course will investigate the state of yoga through movement and the scientific perspective. With a strong somatic focus, we discern awareness through the lens of the body.
This course is for you:

- Practice (and teach) movement with greater somatic awareness
- Understand how embodiment informs presence and pedagogy
- Feel more confident integrating philosophy into physical practice
- Have language to articulate why you teach the way you do

We are collaborating with inspirational senior teachers who are not only deeply experienced, but deeply reflective about how yoga is lived, embodied, and taught over time.
Each of these teachers has been practising, studying, and teaching for decades. They are not offering fixed methods or prescriptive answers, but sharing insight gained through sustained inquiry, in their own bodies, classrooms, and lives.

Learning with teachers who are further along the path allows you to engage with complexity in an accessible, grounded way and to sense how these teachings can be applied in real teaching contexts, not just in theory.
What will I learn in this course?
Exploring the forms: Using sensation to develop awareness
Learning Objectives:
- Understand neuroscientific concepts related to the body senses
- Understand the brain related to movement (processing, planning, patterning)
- Able to articulate the scientific concepts clearly, conveying in simple language.
- Able to understand the role of inner awareness in relation to self-regulation
- Have experience of movement practices to explore awareness
- Understand how to guide and language movement practices to explore awareness
- Understand that developing the knowledge and skills referred to, and the ability effectively to communicate them, require embodiment within the teacher and that personal practice and exploration is required to explore and develop skills of awareness for your own self-regulation.
- Able to plan top-down and bottom-up movement practices.
Using movement science and functional anatomy
Learning Objectives:
- Understand aspects of functional anatomy and movement
- Understand the principles of observing posture and movement
- Understand neuroscience related to postural & muscle tone regulation
- Able to articulate the scientific concepts clearly, conveying in simple language.
Practical and effective methods for working with common/prevalent musculoskeletal concerns
Learning Objectives:
Understand the common musculoskeletal conditions (within the scope of a yoga teacher):
Lumbago/SIJ dysfunction;
Hip/knee/shoulder osteoarthritis;
Joint replacement;
Plantar fasciitis;
Rotator cuff dysfunction;
Disrupted vertebral curves (scoliosis/hyperkyphosis/hypolordosis/forward head)
Applying inner focus to active movement
Learning Objectives:
- Have engaged in discussion of asana in relation to the state of yoga
- Have experience of asana practices to explore movement, creating the conditions for experiencing yoga
- Have an understanding of how movement relates to self-regulation
- Able to employ the skills of inner focus and key movement principles to sequencing an integrated practice.
Working with common/prevalent concerns using functional movement
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the symptomatic presentation of common musculoskeletal conditions/variations
- Understand the continuum of functional movement
- Know the 7 root movements and be able to apply these to the organisation of practice/instruction
- Will be able to appropriately use props for the conditions/variations
- Understand the principles and practices of somatic strength training/joint stabilization
- Able to apply this understanding to sequencing principles and compose a safe and integrated practice.
Professional considerations for working with conditions/variations
Learning Objectives:
- Understand when to refer/recommend different professional interventions, including healthcare providers
- A clear understanding of the rules of confidentiality
- To have clarity on the importance of teaching what you know well and learning to build your professional lane of competence.
Course Structure
The 50 hours of this course includes: 30 hours live online sessions spread across four weekends; 13 hours of pre-recorded content; and 7 hours of self-study.
(From Sept 2026 onwards: 23 hours live online sessions spread across four weekends; 20 hours of pre-recorded content; and 7 hours of self-study)
Who is this for?
This course is for anyone with a movement practice and a foundational understanding of experiential anatomy. It is a Core element of the Advanced Teacher Training but may be completed independently of that training.
