Principles of Sequencing and Progression, in Asana and Beyond

‘Krama’ in yoga — a term taken from Tantra — suggests a step-by-step path that acknowledges that we don’t just ‘do’ asanas, but enter into the experience progressively, incorporating the experiential learning from each step into the one that follows. This applies as much to the therapeutic wisdom of yoga practice as it does to its spiritual dimensions. This two day workshop takes the student beyond physiological sequencing, and closer to the heart of the kinds of transformation and healing that is the deeper aim of yoga in connection with spiritual growth.

We most often think of ‘sequencing’ as simply a physiological rationale for how we string yoga poses together in a series. But in a much deeper sense, ‘Krama’ is about the revelations we explore at each stage of practice that unveil the next stage of experiential understanding.

What will be covered in this workshop?

Contemporary awareness of myofascial lines through the work of Tom Myers and others has contributed to emphasis upon ‘chains’ of movement in areas of fitness, and we will take a page from this evolving understanding of functional fitness to establish manageable principles for sequencing a class or a short protocol for private sessions.

Beyond basic fitness goals (which is a legitimate interest that often brings people to yoga) we have tools for recognizing imbalances in these chains of movement that can be at the root of pain syndromes, joint pain or deterioration, and even nerve pain or numbness rooted in the fascia.

  • We will go into useful and useable detail on recognizable syndromes — the ‘Crossed’ syndromes of the upper and lower body, Movement Impairment Syndromes, including rotational, which show up in students’ difficulties with yoga poses, and significant Functional Lines at work in asana practice — all with an eye to refining our sequencing of poses and vinyasas.
  • This immersion is about giving and clarifying tools for responding effectively. This will be especially helpful when we remember that sequencing is not just about how you plan or prepare a class: it has to do with how you respond ‘on the fly’ when things aren’t working in class!
  • Special attention will be given to the psoas in its relationship to surrounding muscles in fluid, functional work in asana. And in a deeper look at our central ‘core,’ we’ll be looking at the relationship between the autonomic nervous system (beyond older ideas of ‘stress’ v. ‘relaxation’ states)
  • Looking at the vagus nerve (and the cranial nerves in general) — with special attention to the neck, and practical releases and realignments for the neck. The framework will touch on the Polyvagal Theory that looks to have great implications for physical and behavioral health and healing.

Certification

You will receive a Yogacampus certificate of completion on finishing this workshop. The workshop counts toward CPD hours.
