Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery

This 5 day course offers a yoga therapy approach to managing insomnia. Lisa Sanfilippo’s Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery is a unique synthesis of simple, essential yoga based knowledge, tools and resources to help people to sleep better, recover from insomnia and feel more alert.

Course Information


With contributions from a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Shivanthi Sathanandan, and a detailed training manual, this course provides both the theoretical and practical training necessary to teach yoga classes, courses and one to ones for those experiencing sleep problems. Sessions will include asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, marma points, mudra and consultation on healthy sleep habits. You will learn to tailor what you offer to individual needs and to work with different body-mind sleep ‘types.’

The emphasis of the course is on supporting healthy sleep through appropriate holistic yoga practices. There will be opportunities for teaching practice, as well as an informal assessment on the final day.

Each day will include a practice of the techniques being learnt, including asana (hatha and restorative), pranayama, meditation, and more so that you have direct experience of all the practices that you are offering to others. We will follow the sleep-wake guidance we will give to others in how we approach the training day. Many who take the course notice that their sleep improves whether they are ‘insomniac’ or not!

Course outline:
On Day 1 you will learn the principles of Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery.

We will then take this into a weekend workshop where you will observe the teaching of the key components of the course and classes in a two day intensive format. Days 2 and 3 will be an opportunity for you to learn how this information can be taught in an open environment. You will therefore be observing, practising and assisting a live group of people as part of an integrated learning experience.

On days 4 and 5 you will be back with your original group to review and deepen your understanding of the practices and principles and learn how to apply them as a teacher in your work with students and clients. The knowledge assessment will take place on the last day.

The course will address the following topics:
• Trouble getting to sleep
• Waking in the middle of the night
• Waking too early
• Sleeping too short or too long
• Daytime exhaustion

We will discuss the relationship of sleep recovery techniques to issues such as:
• Adrenal fatigue/ burnout
• Mom (and Dad)somnia – parental sleeplessness
• Mental health and sleep problems
• Identifying post-traumatic insomnia
• Coping with menopause-related sleep issues

In addition to specific skills for dealing with sleep related issues, participants will also learn a therapeutic approach to yoga teaching that includes an assessment of the 5 kosas, simple restorative yoga, and basic assessment skills. By the end of the course, students will also be equipped to teach 4-6 weeks courses on Sleep Recovery.

Certification

You will receive a Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery Certificate and will be eligible for listing in the online directory of Yoga for Sleep Recovery Specialists upon satisfactory completion of a knowledge assessment on the final day of training.

Pre Course Work

Please note that some pre-reading and reflection will enable you to benefit most from this training. There will be some review exercises during the course, so it’s helpful to set aside some time between course days for this.
