The word bandha is usually translated as “lock,” but what does that actually mean? And where is it located in the physical body?

The pelvic floor is made up of a complex group of muscles, resembling something of a hammock. Forming a diamond shape at the base of your pelvis, these muscles are bordered by the pubic bone in the front, the coccyx in the back, and the sitting bones on the sides. So why do the ancient texts like the Hatha Yoga Pradipika instruct us to contract the muscles of the perineum/cervix and hold for as long as possible, then release? Join senior yoga teacher and author Melanie Cooper for a 3-hour dive into the pelvic floor and its mysteries.

We will look at questions such as:

  • Is a strong Moola Bandha equal to a strong Pelvic Floor? (spoiler alert No!)
  • How does the Pelvic Floor naturally move with the breath?
  • How can we teach Moola bandha in a way that is functionally healthy for the body?
  • How does the pelvic floor interact with the Gluteus muscles and Periformis?
  • How does the Pelvic floor affect our mental health

Some 80% of people have some kind of pelvic floor dysfunction. Moola Bandha could be making this worse. This is knowledge every yoga teacher needs to have.

Melanie will untangle the theory and myths behind the Pelvic Floor, and look at practical exercises to keep the muscle group strong but supple, as well as functional.
