This course offers you the chance to train specifically to teach yoga that repairs your ability to sleep and rest deeply by starting with fundamental sleep knowledge and habits, and drawing upon solid yoga and psychotherapeutically sound techniques.

This is the training that brings Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery to life.

Course Description

Live Online, drawing from both Sleep Recovery and Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery, plus an online learning platform for knowledge review and homework, this course provides both the theoretical and practical training necessary to teach yoga classes, courses, and one to ones for those experiencing basic sleep problems.

Sessions will include asana, pranayama, meditation, marma points, and consultation on healthy sleep habits. You will learn to tailor what you offer to individual needs and to work with different body-mind sleep ‘types.’

The emphasis of the course is on supporting healthy sleep through appropriate holistic yoga practices. There will be opportunities for teaching practice, as well as an assessment on the final day.

Each day will include a practice of the techniques being learnt, including asana (hatha and restorative), pranayama, meditation, and more, so that you have direct experience of all the practices that you are offering to others. We will follow the sleep-wake guidance we will give to others in how we approach the training day. Many who take the course notice that their sleep improves whether they are ‘insomniac’ or not!

We know that sleep is essential to health, wellbeing and happiness: yet recent studies show that between 20 and 60 per cent of adults in the UK, throughout Europe the US and beyond have conditions ranging from occasional troublesome sleeplessness to clinically diagnosable insomnia.

The Sleep Recovery methods are practical, down-to-earth and clear: grounded in yogic, yoga therapeutic and psychotherapeutically sound principles.

Learn the essential knowledge, tools and resources that accompany the 5 Steps of Sleep Recovery- based on the 5 kosas (layers) of embodied consciousness.

Course Structure

The course is offered as a blended learning course, with live online sessions delivered via Zoom and supported by Yogacampus’ state of the art online learning system.

Live sessions will include:

  • taught practices of āsana, prāṇāyāma, and meditation
  • group discussions and feedback
  • lectures
  • teacher led discussions
  • small group practical teaching exercises.

You will also be required to:

  • have copies of, and read before / during the course: Sleep Recovery and Yoga Therapy for Insomnia and Sleep Recovery
  • attend knowledge lectures both recorded and live online
  • participate in online practice sessions during the training
  • maintain a personal sleep recovery practice daily using the tools of the course
  • offer constructive feedback on other participants’ teaching
  • complete online knowledge review quizzes and other written and practical assignments
  • participate in teaching reviews to assess your digestion and ability to present Sleep Recovery material.

While some of the course material is recorded so that you can go back and review, the bulk of the training is live and participative. A substantial part involves your review of the course materials, personal practice, and practice teaching.

Course Schedule

Sleep Recovery Teacher Training has 3 modules. Each module will be taught Online Live and will be supported with some recorded content.

Module 1, Days 1 and 2:

This module covers the science of sleep and rest and the basics of Sleep Recovery Steps 1 and 2: Physical and Energetic aspects of sleep recovery. We explore the first two steps (physical and energetic) in depth, learning the key asana practices and breathing techniques essential for those stages and using them in depth.

Module 2, Days 3 and 4:

Using Sleep Recovery concepts and practices in classes and with clients. We explore in depth steps 3, 4 and 5 (mental, emotional and spiritual aspects) and cover the 5 week Sleep Recovery Course structure and content, as well as working one to one with yoga students/ clients.

Module 3, Days 5 and 6: in Working Groups with Teacher and Tutors

Solidify your understanding by presenting mini-sessions of Sleep Recovery and practice reviewing your approach to working one to one. We will use breakout groups to review and deepen your understanding of the practices and principles and learn how to apply them as a teacher in your work with students and clients.

The knowledge assessment will take place on the last day.

Each day will run from 13.00 to 18.00 UK time (with a break). Between modules, you will have online knowledge review, case example questions to complete, and practice teaching with small groups or a teaching buddy.

What Will I Learn?

You will gain the essential knowledge, tools, and resources to offer effective classes, courses, workshops, and one to one sessions that recondition the aspects of a person’s life that have gone out of balance directly affecting their sleep, wakefulness and ability to rest.

The 5 steps of sleep recovery integrate physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of life, habits and practices, forming a 5 week curriculum, a framework for one to one client assessment and action, and methods for helping students and clients to improve and measure their progress.

You will learn approaches to assist people who are experiencing:

  • Trouble getting to sleep
  • Waking in the middle of the night
  • Waking too early
  • Sleeping too short or too long
  • Daytime exhaustion

We will discuss the relationship of sleep recovery techniques to issues such as:

  • Adrenal fatigue/ burnout
  • Mom (and Dad)somnia – parental sleeplessness
  • Mental health and sleep problems
  • Identifying post-traumatic insomnia
  • Coping with menopause-related sleep issues

Practices include yoga postures/stretches (asana), breath techniques (pranayama), meditation, self-accupresure (marma), and consultation on healthy sleep habits.

You will learn to tailor what you offer to individual needs and to work with different body-mind sleep ‘types.’

Upon passing the final assessment, yoga teachers can be accredited as a Sleep Recovery Yoga Teacher, and those with qualifications in other areas are eligible for certification as a Sleep Recovery Professional.

Who is this Course for?

  • yoga teachers and yoga therapists
  • experienced practitioners of bodywork, counselling or any other helping profession and/or yoga teachers wishing to share standalone sleep recovery practices with others, in an individual or group setting

You will receive a certificate of completion upon finishing all days of the course, submitting the required homework and passing the final assessment. The assessments are straightforward - if you have been doing the work throughout and integrating the feedback you receive, you will pass them.

Upon successful completion of the course and assessment you will be eligible to join the Sleep Recovery Network at a small additional annual membership fee. This includes bi-annual knowledge updates, course promotion materials, and access to updated information once your training finishes. While this is not required, it provides you with ongoing linkage to the development of Sleep Recovery and opportunities to promote your work.

Both are easily available in paperback or Kindle versions. Please ensure that you order the required books from your vendor of choice as soon as you have registered for the training and have access to both books during the course.

As a supplement to these books, it is essential that trainees read the manual throughout the training, this is supplied via the blended online learning platform once you have joined the course.

Course Assignments

During the course, you will:

  • attend each of the live lectures- up to a maximum of 90 mins total live teaching during the course can be missed
  • prepare to teach mini-versions of each week of the sleep recovery course
  • do practical teaching of all the sleep recovery tools
  • teach the basic knowledge points for each step of sleep recovery
  • practise sleep recovery tools each day from the start of module 1 to the start of module 3


This course will be not be recorded and participation in all live sessions is essential for certification.

Meet the Teacher

Lisa Sanfilippo, your course leader is a UKCP accredited qualified psychotherapist, a yoga therapist, and teacher trainer and the author of Yoga Therapy for Insomnia & Sleep Recovery (Singing Dragon, 2019) and Sleep Recovery (Bloomsbury/Green Tree, 2020). In her nearly 20 years teaching yoga she has taught extensively at The Life Centre, Triyoga and abroad and worked with one to one clients from all walks of life.

Lisa is joined by Sleep Recovery Alumni who serve as course tutors and assistants.

After the Course

On satisfactory completion of the course, you will be ready to

  • incorporate sleep recovery principles into your yoga teaching
  • teach sleep recovery practices of asana, pranayama, meditation and marma points as a standalone individuals and groups
  • teach the 5-week Sleep Recovery course
  • offer one to ones based on the Sleep Recovery principles


On satisfactory completion of the course, you will receive a Yogacampus Certificate of Attendance.

If you complete all of the assignments and pass the practice teaching assessments, you will be eligible for membership in the Sleep Recovery Network, eligible for the online Sleep Recovery directory, two professional knowledge update seminars per year, group supervision for one to one Sleep Recovery teaching at a discounted rate, marketing materials to promote your Sleep Recovery courses and classes, and access to discounted copies of Sleep Recovery to use as handouts with your students and clients.
