Each live workshop will be led in the format of a presentation, Q&A and practice

Just as music begins with a limited set of notes or vibrations that combine into chords and keys that open into a field of creative possibilities, sequencing in yoga is a bit like music. The possibilities for action can form chords or asanas that can be played at different tempos in different keys or moods. Some actions fit nicely with the flow and feeling; some can be surprising yet somehow ‘right.’ Other asanas thrown into the mix can just seem ‘off’ or out of place.

In this three part workshop series we will examine ideas to guide and inspire you to become more creative and expansive in your sequencing, and for directing sequencing to address pain problems, joint health and mobility, and imbalances that give rise to the need for a ‘tune-up.’

This is an invitation to listen to your own body and tune into your students’ bodies, and feel your way through a flow that hits the right notes, and is never quite the same twice.

Connecting Upper and Lower Body, 18th July

We will look at the fascial lines, both postural and functional, and how an understanding of these can help us connect the upper and lower body. The relationship between the hips and legs, shoulders and arms, neck and sacrum; and how these relate to classes of poses and can complement each other.
When a practice may be focused on a particular class of poses, for example backbending, a proper understanding of the fascial lines and related key muscles can assist in creating a balanced practice which feels good for your students.

The Body Map: Envisioning Your Composition, 25th July

A close look at locating and understanding pain and joint problems using the fascial and functional lines on a ‘body map’. How to create sequences to address pain and joint issues and working with balancing both sides of the body.

This will include tuning into the ‘tight spots’ that show up in the normal course of practice, and how to address them in a more whole-body way, rather than just ‘chasing the pain.’
This session will involve tools for assessment as well as pointers on the key muscles or muscle groups that always need to be taken into account in practice and how to work with them in a way that suits your body.
We’ll include consideration of how these ideas might be brought into a general class when you are aware of specific problems affecting some students.

Challenges and Progressions, 1st August

The third session will incorporate and address questions and issues from participants where a more extended treatment is needed.
We will address the matter of more progressive sequencing, how to move from simpler actions toward more challenging poses, where strength or flexibility are issues.
As time permits, some ideas about working with scoliosis and related postural imbalances such as the shorter leg syndrome will be included.

Certification

Upon completion of this workshop, you will receive a Yogacampus Certificate of Completion.
