Ayurveda is often referred to as the sister science to yoga but what happens to yoga practices when they are viewed through the lens of Ayurveda. This 3 day workshop teaches students to learn to use yoga practices with greater awareness and therapeutic skill bespoke to your individual clients and group sessions.

What is the workshop about?

Yoga practices when viewed through an Ayurvedic lens offers teachers helpful approaches to supporting individual clients and group sessions. The course will introduce the basic principles of Ayurveda through the 5 elements; 3 doshas (which includes determining doshic types for prakriti (“nature” state) and vikriti (the “condition”/imbalance)) and 3 gunas. The whole body will be perceived in relation to the elements, doshas and gunas as part of understanding how to use asana, pranayama, mudras, mantras and mediation to assist in bringing homeostasis to the mind, body and approach to daily life.

There will be light discussion on other Ayurvedic factors that are part of working with clients and groups such as seasonal environment; supporting agni (digestive capacity) etc.

The training will combine theoretical discussion and experiential practices.

Course contents:

There will be daily group practices morning (asana) and afternoon (normally pranayama/meditation).

Day 1 – The foundations

• Historical context
• 5 elements/nature; 3 Doshas
• Prakriti and vikriti
• 3 Gunas (Mahagunas)
• Ayurvedic & Tantric view of body
• How to create a “well rounded” practice (sattvic)
• Ayurvedic guidelines on what to consider when teaching a class/client

Day 2 – Into the body

• How to work with Vata excess
• How to work with Pitta excess
• Case studies

DAY 3 – Practice

• How to work with Kapha excess
• Case studies: client scenario; group class scenario
• Assignment: Create a practice plan in small groups
• Group presentations
• Q & A’s

What skills will you come away from the course with?

1) Understanding of the elements, doshas and gunas in relation to the body
2) Awareness of how to use asana, mudra, meditation and pranayama to encourage balance for body and mind.
3) Create individualised yoga sessions to support prakriti and balance vikriti.
4) Use of basic Ayurvedic knowledge into classes and working with clients
5) Greater insight in how to balance the 5 movements of prana.
6) Understanding the effects of time/place/circumstance for clients and classes.
